Once again the artists of Gippsland responded wonderfully to our competition and we had even more entries than last year. Below are some photos of the gallery team considering how best to hang all these wonderful works.

In the centre of the gallery space, setting off the canvases on the walls and with a distinctly marine and coastal theme are twenty-four delicate and intriguing sculptures by Sharon Monk.

Sunday 23rd January ... And the winners are ...

Our three judges were Susan Storm, Andrea McCallum and Sian Adnam who said they had a really difficult job deciding which of all the fantastic entries should win prizes. It apparently took them hours to make their decisions.

The opening event was very well attended. Nobody did a head count but a guess of 200 people was made. We calculated by the number of sausages ordered and consumed, which was double the number eaten last year (yes, I know, maybe we just ate more ...). The BBQ, ably presided over by Catherine McGlead (and her mum Noleen) and Windy Ridge's wine stall were just as popular as last year's event. Foot-tapping music was provided by local group The Tilders which created a festive atmosphere. There was hardly room to move in the gallery as people squeezed in to look at the competition entries and the beautiful work of Sharon Monk.

Heather Downing, President of the gallery committee thanked all the sponsors for their generosity and especially thanked the hard-working volunteers. Ned Dennis, Community Strengthening Co-ordinator with South Gippsland Shire Council formally opened the exhibition and spoke briefly about the advantages all round for a community such as ours, when businesses sponsor an arts event, which encourages people from all walks of life to flex their creative muscles and enter the competition, so joining the broad community of artists in this district. Visitors come to see the results (and eat the food, drink the wine, enjoy the music, buy the art (hopefully) and make new friends) while the sponsors receive benefit from the extra exposure. Thus all elements of the community are involved in a happily circular spread of benefits.

And now the important part ... the winners are as follows:

The Grand Prize was awarded to Janette Arnold-Collins for her two-canvas work titled "Mermaid's Garden".

Janette won $500 cash.

First Prize for a 2D work was awarded to Alvina Bishop-Edwards for "At Sea". She won $150 in cash and a gift voucher to the value of $100 from Morwell Art & Framing.

Neither Janette nor Alvina (who were both part of the vibrant exhibition, Allowance Give, Before A Sleeping Giant, held at the gallery just prior to Life Aquatic) were able to attend Sunday's event to receive their awards personally.

Kate Remfrey was not able to receive her award in person.

Learning to Make an Artist Book

Artist Book Workshop on October 24

Originally offered to coincide with the travelling artist book exhibition Pages or Not - It's a Book! held at the gallery in August, our postponed workshop was definitely worth the wait!

Enthusiastic participants spent last Sunday learning the intricacies of cutting and paper-folding to make three different styles of artist books.

Our tutor, Margaret Mason, came from Bairnsdale for the day and brought with her a huge variety of hand made books to inspire us. There was a lacquered book the size of a thick playing card which unfolded to a flat sheet of A3 paper, intricately cut. There was a book with silk pages demonstrating a different style and pattern of embroidery on each page. There were accordion-style books with lines cut in careful places to reveal pop-up sections to which precious images could be attached.

These little books are a wonderful way to highlight a poem, a photograph, a series of prints or a combination of artistic genres. Often they start out as intriguing parcels which unfold to reveal an illustrated story. The techniques we learned can now be used to experiment with our own versions of book making.

Someone suggested that in six months' time we should have our own exhibition of the books we make as a result of the inspiration of our day learning to make artist books ... watch this space!

The inaugural Life Aquatic competition

Life Aquatic 2010 was a small works art competition and exhibition held at Stockyard Gallery during January/February, with prizes to the value of $2500.

To enter, Gippsland artists of any age, purchased an 8" x 8" canvas upon which they interpreted the theme: our marine and coastal environment.

On opening day, over 160 canvases lined the gallery walls in a vibrant display of creativity. Over 200 people braved 36 degree heat to attend the BBQ and find out who won the prizes provided by our generous sponsors.

Our four judges, Gary Miles (modern/abstract artist), Sharon Anderson (visual artist & art teacher), Janine Riches (contemporary artist) and Craig Stubbings (Chief Ranger with Parks Victoria) were unanimous in awarding first prize ($400 cash) to Andy McPherson for his untitled work and two 2nd prizes - Best 2D work to Jan Gallacher and Best 3D work to Pam Donellan. Each judge also awarded their own prize to four more artists:

  • Gary Miles to Doug Taylor
  • Sharon Anderson to Pat Butinar
  • Janine Riches to Sharn Downing
  • Craig Stubbings to June Riviere

The judges also awarded the Bombora Prize (best work by artist of Secondary School age) to Keira Jacobson and the Minnows Prize (best work by artist of Primary School Age) to Evan McPherson and two Highly Commended Awards to Chloe Cousins and Sean van der Steen.

At the end of the exhibition, Andy McPherson also won The People's Choice Award (I) while Kerry Spokes won The People's Choice (II) and one happy visitor from Melbourne won the Voter's Award, a Wilsons Promontory Wilderness Retreat Holiday Accommodation Package donated by Parks Victoria.

Life Aquatic 2011

Life Aquatic was such a success, and we have had so many people asking us to do it again that we plan to make this competition an annual event. If you missed the first one, watch for details later this year about how to enter Life Aquatic 2011!
