Burarrwanga, Yumaynga

Also known as Jennifer Waters.

Yumaynga Burarrwanga was born at Yirrkala, North East Arnhem Land, NT and lived a tribal life during her youth. She regularly travelled by dugout canoe along the coast to outlying islands on hunting trips with her family.

Yumaynga was instructed in traditional painting techniques by her uncle, the well known artist, Narritjin. Many of the paintings are stories that have been passed down over the generations and tell of the creators that gave birth to the people, and gave them language, laws and ceremonies. Other paintings relate to the sacred animals (totems) and land, which the creators allocated to each clan.

Since moving to Victoria she has adapted the traditional style of bark painting to suit different media and themes.

The Aborigines (Yulnu) of North East Arnhem Land still maintain their cultural beliefs which bind together the land, animals and people.
